Chick Lake

canoe, portage, wilderness, adventure, camp

Chick Lake…  Like most camp sites I’ve been to in Lake of the Woods, I can close my eyes and instantly be back there.  I can see the campsite with tents set up and a lit fire.  The granite campsite gently slopes up to flat tent spots, with just enough grasses to provide a soft spot for sleeping.  I can see the small island to the east along with the high bluffs that surround the east side of the lake.

Looking towards the water, the small inlet that we portaged into is barely visible, which reminds me of the portage.  I remember the portage, the multiple routes through thick trees, ankle deep mud and lichen-covered granite.  But also the beautiful little stream and the occasional tiger lily that tells you that you are almost to the beautiful lake.

Closing my eyes and looking back at Chick Lake, I also see the adventures there.  I can see naps in hammocks, cribbage games, and swimming breaks.  I see the fish caught and the beautiful sunsets.  As night comes I remember the beautiful stars and northern lights.  And just as I lay down to sleep I can faintly hear a pack of wolves howling in the distance.

Creating these memories–the ones I will never forget–is what will continue to always call me back to Laketrails.
